terminals, “we work hand in hand with the union mechanics,” Williams said. “We’re an advocate and a resource
for everyone, and we will support the equipment during its initial warranty period. We’re less than five miles from the Port, so the service level we can provide is excellent. I have a regional service manager here who speaks with Ports America on a daily basis.”
The only thing that has challenged Eastern Lift Truck Co’s further growth at this point, Edmonds and Williams agreed, is a shortage of qualified talent, specifically mechanics. To deal with this issue, the company launched a technician apprentice program.
“We have a full-time trainer on staff who teaches classes every week,” Williams said. “It can be something
as basic as Hydraulic 101 or a model- specific class.”
Based on experience, new hires may train anywhere from 60 to 120 days, before starting a shadow-type rotation with established technicians in the field. The program has helped the company attract candidates with mechanical abilities who may not have normally considered a career in the material handling industry. “We have more than 500 talented mechanics working for our company,” said Edmonds, “and we’re looking for more to join the team.”
