where we are and be able to access the Upper Midwest industrial corridor. That really helps continue to establish us as the premier gateway for autos and roll-on/roll-off.
As a young port director, you set your sights on a few ports you’d like
to be at eventually — Baltimore was always one of those for me. Being
a lover of history, you go back to
1706, and you can really see how a community was built up around the Port. Now we’ve grown together and we get to be that economic engine that provides opportunities for the future. I’m honored to be a part of that.
QWhat has your experience in Baltimore been like so far? What’s
your impression of the Port of Baltimore community and the MPA?
If you’re going to come into a position like this, you need to be thrown
right into the fire. During this year’s legislative session, I had to prepare for presentations before both House and Senate subcommittees. I was briefed by our staff and found out how great the staff is. They got me prepared to answer questions from the Delegates and Senators. So I spent a significant amount of time down in Annapolis.
This week, I spent two days in Washington, gaining knowledge of the political landscape that surrounds the Port. I’ve had the opportunity to have a conversation with one of the City Councilmembers so far, and that’s given me a very unique perspective on the support that the Port has.
I’ve also had the opportunity to present to numerous stakeholder groups, including the Baltimore Port Alliance. I’ve met with a lot of our partners to understand the direction they’re going and ways we can work together.
The welcome I’ve received here
is beyond anything I ever could’ve imagined. There’s a maritime community here that’s very involved — they want to make their opinions known and want to understand what we see as the next growth opportunity and how they can participate.
